2013 GPI PoY: Volpe Survives World Series, Still #1

Six weeks of madness and craziness at the World Series of Poker and Paul Volpe (GPI#12) was able to retain his #1 status atop the 2013 Global Poker Index Player of the Year Leaderboard although the race is still wide open as we head into the second season…

The Man to Beat

Paul Volpe GPIWhen Paul Volpe took over the #1 spot the GPI Player of the Year Leaderboard on April 22nd, little did anyone know that he would still be holding onto the top spot three months later, in fact, Volpe has lead the GPI PoY race for 19 of the past 20 weeks … Mike Watson held the #1 rank during the week of April 15th.

Volpe didn’t have a WSOP for the ages, but he still produced a few solid scores which allowed him to hold onto the top spot. Volpe’s WSOP results included a final table appearance in Event #43 – 10K Deuce to Seven Lowball and a 25th place finish in Event #19 – 5K Pot Limit Hold’em:

Watson Gaining Momentum

Mike Watson GPIAfter spending that one week atop the rankings the week of April 15th, Mike Watson (GPI#7) started to tumble; he fell all the way down to #9 at one time. But business certainly picked up for Watson at the WSOP this summer. A total of eight cashes including five Top 10 finishes which is very, very impressive.

After a successful trip to EPT Barcelona last year, Watson will certainly be looking to add to his already impressive 2013 season which already includes 11 Top 10 finishes:

Focus Shifts to Schemion

Ole Schemion GPIWhile many big name pros such as David Peters (GPI#24) and Davidi Kitai (GPI#64) have set themselves up for a shot at the GPI PoY crown in the coming months, young German star Ole Schemion (GPI#4) may just be THE player to watch as August begins.

Under the legal age limit to enter a casino in America, Schemion was unable to participate at the World Series of Poker this past summer. Schemion did pickup points when he finishes 35th at the inaugural International Stadiums Poker Tour (ISPT) event at Wembley Stadium in London.

With European events coming in the next few months – including EPT tour stops in Barcelona, London and Prague and WPT events in Cyprus, Paris (WPT Grand Prix de Paris) and, like the EPT, Prague, there will be plenty of opportunities for Schemion to make up for lost time this summer and get right back into contention for GPI Player of the Year.
