2014 GPI PoY: Heimiller, Mercier and Merson Move Up

A trio of WSOP bracelet winners continue to push Mike McDonald at the top of the 2014 GPI PoY race…

Jason Mercier GPIAfter cashing at the WPT L.A. Poker Classic, double bracelet winners Jason Mercier (GPI#4) and Greg Merson (GPI#217) each gained valuable 2014 GPI Player of the Year Points this past week.

Mercier’s 43rd place finish at the LAPC saw him move up two spots to #3 overall on the PoY Leaderboard. This was Mercier’s fifth qualifying score so far in 2014.

Merson picked up the 31st spot at Commerce last week, allowing him to gain close to 20 spots in the PoY race. Merson, who also re-enters the GPI300 this week, is primed to play in more tournaments on the live circuit this season.

Another bracelet winner to make a big move in this week’s update is veteran circuit grinder Dan Heimiller (GPI#116), who earned his 9th and 10th cashes of the 2014 season in the past week. Heimiller collected his third cash this year at the LAPC, earning a 36th place finish in the Main Event. He then made the short drive to Rancho Mirage, California and final tabled the Heartland Poker Tour California event.

Heimiller’s successes see him jump 35 spots to #2 overall. He sits just under 70 GPI Points behind race leader Mike McDonald (GPI#6).

Andrea Dato GPIA pair of WPT Main Events may play a role in next week’s update. In Italy, the WPT Venice Carnival is currently playing down to the money as Andrea Dato (GPI#280) is currently leading the charge. Dato is looking for his fourth cash of this young poker season.

Meanwhile, in San Jose, the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star drew over 700 participants. The money bubble busted late last night, the final 36 players will play down to the WPT final table later today in Northern California.
