Deutschland Double: Rettenamier, Schemion Take Over GPI/PoY

In what could be the biggest coup of the 2013 poker season, a pair of German poker pros have taken the top spots on the Global Poker Index and in the GPI Player of the Year Race. Not to be outdone, one lone Canadian follows them both in each category:

MAD MARVIN MAGIC

Marvin Rettenmaier GPIFor the 13th time of his poker career, Marvin Rettenmaier (GPI#1, +1) is the #1 ranked player on the Global Poker Index. Rettenmaier’s last enjoyed time at the top earlier this season between February and May – where he spent 11 straight weeks at #1.

Rettenmaier’s Main Event cash at EPT Barcelona is all it took for him to takeover the GPI, although the aging factor did hit Jason Mercier (GPI#3, -2) a bit. Mercier lost enough points to fall down to third this week.

OLE ON TOP OF THE PoY

Ole Schemion GPIAlthough it was expected that Daniel Negreanu would lead the Player of the Year Race once the new rankings were released, it’s Ole Schemion (GPI#6, +4) who’s double-score at EPT Barcelona allows him to move up six spots to takeover from Paul Volpe (GPI#10, +1) – who acutally drops to 4th overall – at the top of the GPIPoY Leaderboard.

Following his sixth place finish in the Super High Roller event (which was part of last week’s rankings update), Schemion – who has legally not been able to play any tournaments in the United States yet given his age – cashed in the Main Event and again finished sixth, this time in the High Roller event to close out EPT Barcelona.

THE KID IS ALRIGHT

Daniel Negreanu GPIIt’s certainly not the results Daniel Negreanu (GPI#2, +5) was looking for. A win in the High Roller event at EPT Barcelona and Negreanu would have taken over the #1 spot on both the GPI and PoY leaderboards – Negreanu would end up finishing second.

But still, Negreanu is in prime position in both races and sets himself up nicely with both WSOP Europe and EPT London right around the corner.
