GPI300: Colman takes PoY lead + O’Dwyer’s big return

We have a new leader atop the GPI Player of the Year race …

PLAYER OF THE YEAR UPDATE

Daniel Colman’s amazing run in 2014 continued earlier this week with a final table appearance in the Super High Roller event at the APPT Asia Championship of Poker, currently ongoing at the City of Dreams in Macau.

Although Colman finished 7th in the event, it was enough for him to takeover the Player of the Year race, moving ahead of Dan Smith.

Davidi Kitai and Ami Barer also continue making PoY charges with results from earlier this week.

VIEW FROM THE TOP

Dan Smith GPIAlthough he lost his lead atop the GPI Player of the Year race, Dan Smith (GPI#1, =) remains on top of the Global Poker Index, closing in on three straight months sitting first on the GPI World Poker Rankings.

Outside of Smith, there was a lot of movement inside the Top 10: Davidi Kitai (GPI#4 CB, +1) and Olivier Busquet (GPI#5 CB, +1) each move up one spot, pushing reigning GPI Player of the Year Ole Schemion to #6.

Former World #1 Daniel Negreanu (GPI#7, +1) and WPT World Championship runner-up Byron Kaverman (GPI#8, -1) play a little game of switcheroo, trading places inside the Top 10.

Meanwhile, Paul Volpe (GPI#9, +2) and 2010 WSOP Main Event winner Jonathan Duhamel (GPI#10, +2) return to the Top 10 this week while Stephen Chidwick (GPI#11, -2) and Alex Bilokur (GPI#24, -14) drop out.

SWIMMING UPSTREAM

The man who most believe took the biggest bad beat in televised tournament poker history, Connor Drinan (GPI#102 CB, +72), pushes his way up over 70 spots to a career-high #102 this week. Drinan finished 4th in the APPT ACOP Super High Roller event.

Kitty Kuo (GPI#176, +56), Artur Koren (GPI#60 CB, +53), David Vamplew (GPI#100, +26) and former Spelling Bee Champ Pratyush Buddiga (GPI#36 CB, +19) are amongst other notables moving up the ranks this week.

DOWN THE LADDER

Paul Berende (GPI#246, -65) takes a stumble for the second straight week. Berende has lost 114 positions in the standings over the last 14 days. A strong run at the Master Classics of Poker will certainly go a long way to buck the trend for the Dutch pro.

John Juanda (GPI#236, -38), Max Greenwood (GPI#163, -33) and 2013 WSOP bracelet winner Taylor Paur (GPI#253, -30)

IN-N-OUT

It should come to no one’s surprise to see Stephen O’Dwyer (GPI#98) make his return to the GPI Top 300 this week, just a few weeks after falling out of the 300 for the very first time of his poker career. O’Dwyer bested an all-star field in the Super High Roller event at the APPT ACOP, his first win on tour since winning the EPT Grand Final in May 2013.

On the flip side, WSOP bracelet winner James Collopy (GPI#310) and poker legend Marcel Luske (GPI#342) are amongst eight players to exit the 300 this week.

ON THE BUBBLE

WPT Lucky Hearts Champion James Calderaro sits on the bubble this week. Calderaro has had many successes in the State of Florida – which is very good news for him as the World Poker Tour heads to the Sunshine State this weekend for the presentation of the WPT bestbet Bounty Scramble in Jacksonville. This marks a perfect opportunity for Calderaro to continue the Florida successes.
