GPI300: O’Dwyer’s Upper, The Doc Is In, Ivey’s Out

Tons of action have caused quite the shakeup inside the GPI300:

VIEW FROM THE TOP

Steve O'Dwyer GPIAlthough Jason Mercier and Marvin Rettenmaier remain at their usual positions atop the GPI Top 10, Steve O’Dwyer (GPI#3, +6) has decided to join them at the top.

O’Dwyer has been one of the most consistent winners on the live tournament circuit for quite some time now. The last time he was outside the GPI Top 20 was in January of 2012, over 20 months ago. O’Dwyer’s third place finish in the Super High Roller event at EPT Barcelona allows him to move up six spots to #3 overall in the rankings.

Doc Sands GPIDavid “Doc” Sands (GPI#9, NEW) becomes the first person to enter the GPI Top 10 in quite some time. Sands returns to the Top 10 for the first time since holding the #8 position in July … on the flipside, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (GPI#13, -3) finds himself on the outside, looking in.

SWIMMING UPSTREAM

Ari Engel GPIThe incredible season for Ari Engel (GPI#190, +103) continues. As we mentioned earlier this week in our GPI Tournament Report, Engel has collected 32 cashes so far in 2013 making him a modern-day grinder, and one of the hottest poker players in the world at the moment.

Engel cashed out twice at the River Poker Series in Oklahoma over the weekend pushing his GPI Ranking up to #190. He started the 2013 poker season ranked #347.

Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open fourth place finisher Ray Qartomy (GPI#118, +92) also jumps up the standings, gaining almost 100 positions this week.

DOWN THE LADDER

Simon Ravnsbaek GPIItaly’s Sergio Castelluccio (GPI#245, -64) and Danish poker pro Simon Ravnsbaek (GPI#260, -64) both share the title as biggest fallers within the GPI300 this week.

Poker superstar John Juanda (GPI#170, -48) also takes a big hit this week. Juanda’s fifth place finish at this point of the season one year ago – at the Macau High Stakes Challenge Super High Roller – continued to lose value, explaining the five-time bracelet winner’s fall in the rankings.

IN-N-OUT

Phil Ivey GPISharing the headlines this week is Phil Ivey (GPI#350, -138) who finds himself outside the GPI300 for the first time in the Global Poker Index’s existence. Ivey doesn’t play many tournaments and didn’t have a very good WSOP this past summer so it comes at no surprise that he has dropped this far out.

On a positive note, as expected, Mukul Pahuja (GPI#140, +188) returns to the Top 300 after a week hiatus. Pahuja scored big at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open causing the quick turnaround. Congratulations also to Mukul, who recently got married.
