Jean Noel Thorel is a French poker player who made his first-live event cash in 2008. In the first 3 years, Jean cashed 16 times, made 12 final tables, and earned close to $500,000.
Jean resides in Paris, where he became known as a pharmacy expert and cosmetics pioneer. He made his fortune after developing the concept of Dermatological Biology, which blended biology and cosmetics. In 1985, Jean founded Bioderma in Lyon, an independent laboratory specializing in skin care products, where he created Esthederm, one of the top rated age-fighting cosmetic lines in the world.
After playing poker recreationally, Jean made his first live-event cash at the 2008 Paris Open of Poker when he finished 9th in the €500 NLHE event for €755. His next cash was almost a year later, at the 2009 EPT Deauville, where he finished runner-up in the €20,000 NLHE High Rollers Event to earn €115,200. Jean’s last cashes of the year were at the Rendez Vous A Paris, where he finished 11th for €19,665 in the €10,000 NLHE Grand Prix de Paris, and at the Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic, where he finished 4th in the $300 NLHE Nightly event for $3,590.
In 2010, Jean just cashed once, making the final table of the €1,500 NLHE at the WPT Spanish Championship in Barcelona. He finished 5th, worth €12,800.
As of mid-October, Jean had cashed in 10 events and made 8 final tables in 2011. He started by cashing twice at the EPT Deauville, finishing 6th in the €1,500 NLHE for €18,400, and taking 4th in the €10,000 NLHE High Roller event to earn €53,000. Jean cashed at the EFOP Diamond Championship/WPT Regional Series Paris, when he finished 6th for €13,595 in the €2,000 Gold Championship event.
Jean cashed at the 2011 EPT Grand Final in Madrid, and cashed twice at the EPT Tallinn, finishing runner-up in both the €1,000 NLHE Bounty for €12,000, and the €5,000 NLHE 6-Max Turbo event to earn €15,675. At the EPT Barcelona, Thorel finished 6th in another €5,000 NLHE 6-Max Turbo event, this time for €15,750.
At home in Paris in September, Jean cashed in his first WPT event. At the 2011 Rendez-Vous à Paris, he finished 14th in the €7,500 NLHE WPT Grand Prix de Paris to collect €33,330. The same month, he cashed at the Partouche Poker Tour Cannes, taking 8th place in the €3,000 NLHE for €12,500.
In October, Jean was back in Cannes, where he finished 6th in the €5,000 NLHE 6-Max Turbo event at the WSOP Europe to take home €16,425.
Dubbed “The Nutty Professor” by poker news bloggers, Jean is as well known for his fearless style as he is for his exuberant laughter while playing. His poker opponents seem to agree that when Jean is at the table, there is never a dull moment, and never a lull in the action.
