Rupert Elder is a professional poker player from the Great Britain who made his first live event cash in 2006. In the first 5 years in live tournament, he cashed 13 times, made 4 final tables, cashed twice at the WSOP, won an EPT event, and earned close to $1.5 million.
Growing up in Bury St Edmunds in the UK, Rupert started playing online poker in his teens. He had plans to become a computer programmer or a stock market trader after finishing his studies at Warwick University where he studied Economics. He admits he spent most of his time playing cash games online while in school, and after failing to land a job after graduating, he decided to turn his love of poker into a career by becoming a professional poker player. He earned approximately $500,000 in tournaments on Full Tilt and PokerStars.
At the 2006 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, at just 19 years old, Rupert made his first live-event cash for $10,700 when he finished 82nd in the $7,800 NLHE WPT Main Event.
For the next 3 years, Rupert cashed once a year: at the 2007 Summer Fun event in Nova Gorica, at the the 2008 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour, and at the 2009 PokerStars Baltic Festival in Tallinn.
In 2010, Rupert cashed 4 times and made a pair of final tables. At the Emperor Series in Macau, he finished 4th in the HK$2,500 NLHE for HK$10,800. Next, he made the final table and finished 8th in the £1,000 NLHE Main Event for £3,900 at the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour. To finish his year, he cashed at the Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza in Las Vegas, and at the France Poker Series in Lyon.
During the first 9 months of 2011, Rupert cashed 5 times and won his first major tournament. He began the year by cashing at the Asian Poker Tour in Manila, before finishing in the money at the EPT Berlin. At the EPT San Remo, he won the €5,000 NLHE Main Event for €930,000 and his first title.
In Las Vegas for the 2011 WSOP, he finished 18th in the $2,500 NLHE 6-Max for $25,769 and finished 132nd in the Main Event to earn $54,851.
Currently making his home in London, Rupert says his decision to become a poker pro wasn’t met with opposition by his parents, but thinks his dad hopes that he will get a “real” job one day.
In the meantime, Rupert wants to concentrate on improving his game, play in more European Poker Tour events, and continue to play big cash games online.
