The Closer: Ole Schemion Wins EPT Season 10 Player of the Year

Ole Schemion headed into the EPT Grand Final with what some believed was an insurmountable lead atop the EPT10 Player of the Year leaderboard … however, instead of leaving it to chance, Schemion decided to take matters in his own hands and close the deal himself, earning three cashes in Monte Carlo and officially being named EPT Player of the Year…

THE CLOSER

Ole Schemion GPIIt was going to take a miracle to overtake Ole Schemion (GPI#1) in the EPT Player of the Year race – powered by the Global Poker Index – as the poker world headed to Monte Carlo to battle it out. But, it was possible. Dan Smith (GPI#5) proved it just a few short years ago. His three-win performance at the Grand Final in 2012 would have been enough to steal the top spot away from Schemion this year if your last name was Muehloecker, Selbst or Bilokur.

But Schemion wasn’t about to let that happen. He arrived in Monte Carlo just days after winning his one and only event on the EPT in Season 10 at EPT Sanremo and picked up points right away, finishing 7th in the Super High Roller event.

Schemion would add scores in the Main Event and the 25K High Roller at the EPT Grand Final, running away with the EPT Player of the Year title after taking matters in his own hands and closing the deal.

MONTE CARLO MASTER

Schemion should look into buying some real estate in Monte Carlo as he has enjoyed quite a bit of success inside the halls of the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort in his very short time on the live tournament circuit.

In his three seasons at the EPT Grand Final, Schemion has won three events, earned a total 8 cashes (6 of which were Top 10 finishes) and has collected € 589,850 for his efforts.

Ole Schemion | EPT Grand Final Festival:
Season 8 | 1 Top 10, 1 Cash, € 20,050
Season 9 | 3 wins, 4 Top 10, 4 Cashes, € 187,000
Season 10 | 1 Top 10, 3 Cashes, € 382,800

ONE LAST LOOK AT THE RACE

The talk heading into the EPT Grand Final Festival was whether or not we had a race on our hands … had it not been for Schemion’s masterful close to the season, Thomas Muehloecker (GPI#43) actually would have made a game of it.

Just like Ole, Muehloecker also added three scores to his EPT PoY totals in Monte Carlo, finishing the year with 1,083.73 EPT PoY Points. The Austrian, who started Season 10 by defeating Daniel Negreanu (GPI#14) heads-up in the High Roller event at EPT Barcelona, would have finished just three PoY Points behind the German wunderkind had Schemion been shutout at the Grand Final Festival.

A fantastic run in the final three festivals of the season in Venice, Sanremo and Monte Carlo allowed Alex Bilokur (GPI#16) to move ahead of Vanessa Selbst (GPI#2) and score a third place finish. Selbst, who is currently ranked #2 in the World, would have to settle for fourth, after a very successful season on the EPT. Meanwhile, GPIEPA Rookie of the Year and defending WSOP Europe Main Event Champion Adrian Mateos Diaz (GPI#65) would earn the fifth spot on the Season 10 list.
