GPI National Rankings Report: Spain

ESP FlagSeason 12 of the European Poker Tour kicked off earlier this week in Barcelona. Spain is the home to several big name pros including five-time major event winner Carlos Mortensen (GPI# 201) and Adrian Mateos Diaz (GPI# 49), the youngest man to ever win a World Series of Poker gold bracelet.

With the EPT in town this week, we take you inside the rankings and take a look at the State of the Spaniards in the poker world…

SPAIN | GPI NATIONAL TOP 10

It should come to no one’s surprise to see 21-year-old Diaz ranked atop the Spanish rankings. The young man from San Martin de la Vega is one WPT victory away from joining poker’s Triple Crown Club. The Spaniard won the WSOP Europe Main Event in October 2013 and followed that up with a EPT Grand Final title this past May in Monte Carlo.

SPAIN | NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

A deep run in the 2013 WSOP Main Event seems to have rejuvenated Carlos Mortensen’s career. The 2001 WSOP Main Event Champion has already collected 18 scores so far in 2015, including a 4th place finish at the WPT World Championship in Atlantic City. Mortensen won the WPT Championship back in 2007.

SPAIN | ALL-TIME MONEY LIST

Once again ‘El Matador’ finds himself at the top of this list. Mortensen, who’s first career result came in a Holiday Bonus Tournament at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles in December of 1999. He has since added over $11.9M to his career totals.
