GPI300: Ole Schemion makes history this week

One of the record books for Ole…

VIEW FROM THE TOP

Ole Schemion GPIOle Schemion (GPI#1, =) has done it! The young German star has broken one of the most coveted records on the GPI, spending his record 18th straight week ranked atop the GPI World Poker Rankings.

Schemion surpasses superstars Jason Mercier (GPI#8, -1) and Dan Smith (GPI#20, +2), who had each reached 17 straight weeks atop the rankings in the past. Mercier was the first to reach 17 two years ago while Smith’s 17-week streak ended when Schemion’s current streak started in late December.

Scott Seiver (GPI#2, +1) and Davidi Kitai (GPI#3, -1) continue playing a game of musical chairs this week as the duo once again switch spots in the rankings, each player hoping to take over from Schemion at the top. Neither player has ever reached the #1 rank in the GPI World Poker Rankings.

Byron Kaverman (GPI#5, +4) made the biggest jump inside the lead group this week as all members of the Top 10, once again, remain the same. Kaverman’s Aria High Roller VI victory last month in Las Vegas hit the system this week. Note that Kaverman’s Aria High Roller VII win did not qualify for GPI Points as only 16 players entered the event.

A big win in the Main Event at the latest Venetian Deepstack Extravaganza in Las Vegas has Calvin Anderson (GPI#118, +57) making the most noise inside the Top 300 this week. Anderson, a legendary online pro as well as a star on the live circuit, was ranked as high as #35 in the World this past November.

Argentinian pro Ivan Luca (GPI#170, +56) is back in the news this week. A High Roller victory at UKIPT Nottingham sees Luca make yet another big leap inside the World Rankings. Luca, who has already collected a remarkable 12 scores this season, also moves to #2 in the 2015 GPI Player of the Year race.

DOWN THE LADDER

A pair of American grinders drop over 50 spots in the rankings this week as Justin Young (GPI#223, -61) and Blake Bohn (GPI#225, -59) each drop this week. Bohn may find his way back upstream next week, however, as he finished 3rd at MSPT Maryland earlier this week. That result will affect next week’s rankings.

Sam Trickett (GPI#228, -57), former November Niner Jeremy Ausmus (GPI#157, -42) and Joni Jouhkimainen (GPI#219, 31) are a few other big name pros who dropped in the standings this week.

IN-N-OUT

Coming off a prelim event victory at the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown, 2013 WSOP Main Event Champion Ryan Riess (GPI#283) is one of 11 players to enter the GPI300 this week. This is the first time in over 10 months that Riess returns to the 300.

Congratulations to Steve Karp (GPI#285) who makes his debut inside the GPI300 this week!
