The GPI Partners With European Poker Awards

Europe’s most prestigious poker awards has just had its reputation boosted with the addition of a prestigious partner in the form of the Global Poker Index.

Known for being the most comprehensive poker ranking system in the world, the GPI will now work alongside the Aviation Club de France and French poker magazine Poker52 to deliver an award ceremony like no other.

Set to take place on January 23rd, 2013, the evening will see some of Europe’s best players descend on the luxurious Aviation Club to receive recognition for their efforts in 2012. Once the formalities of the ceremony have taken place, the luminaries in attendance will sit down for a gastronomic feast at the acclaimed Elysees Biarritz.

Judging this year’s nominees will be a panel of industry experts, Poker52 readers and, of course, those inside the GPI’s European Top 300 will be in with a shot at the honours. Indeed, to make the first year of the GPI’s association with the awards, a special GPI European Poker Award will be presented to the player who tops the rankings.

Currently topping the GPI European rankings is Bertrand Grospellier with 2,759.03 points. However, the Frenchman isn’t guaranteed to scoop the award as Marvin Rettenmaier (2,686.55) and Philipp Gruissem (2,565.60) are hot on his heels.

Commenting on the partnership, GPI CEO Alexandre Dreyfus said: “We would like to create our own GPI Awards, but with the historic relationship we have with Bruno Fitoussi and the ACF, we felt it would be more pertinent to pool our efforts and make the GPI European Poker Awards Europe’s one and only such event.”

As the awards draw closer we’ll be keeping you up to date of any shifts in the rankings and those players who are likely to be making an appearance in Paris in January.

The GPI European Poker Awards will award players in the following categories:

Player of the Year

Best tournament performance

Rookie of the Year

Europe’s Leading Lady

Poker Staff Person of the Year

Internet Player of the Year

Rob Gardner Memorial Award

Best European event of the year

Lifetime Achievement Award
