GPI300: Schemion’s and Selbst’s great fall

Mercier still on top while a pair of former World #1’s continue to fall …

Jason Mercier (GPI#1, =) retains the #1 spot on the GPI World Poker Rankings for a second consecutive week. The man who has spent the most weeks at the top begins his 55th total week at #1.

Mercier, who has been off for the past few weeks, is expected to return to action shortly. With the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open – in his backyard – and the EPT Barcelona Festival right around the corner, Mercier will have a bunch of opportunities to add to his lead.

Former World #1 Scott Seiver (GPI#2, +2) comes in at #2 this week. Seiver spent four weeks at the top of the GPI World Poker Rankings in May.

Speaking of #1’s, a pair of former World #1’s continue their slide in the standings. Ole Schemion (GPI#33, -18) drops to his lowest ranking in over 30 months. The last time Schemion ranked outside the Top 25 was in January 2013. Schemion’s inactivity on the felt in the past few months has finally caught up to him. In the past, the German star was unable to play the World Series of Poker due to his age, but he has been eligible to play the WSOP for the past two years and has chosen to play a very limited schedule instead.

Just like Schemion, a reduced schedule has seen former #1 Vanessa Selbst (GPI#292, +5) drop considerably in the rankings. Selbst, who was ranked #1 in the World just 13 months ago, is in grave danger of falling out of the GPI300 for the very first time in her poker career. After posting some of the best results on tour in 2013 and 2014, Selbst has only collected a few results so far this season. With her 2nd place finish at the 2013 WPT Borgata Poker Open set to enter a new aging period in the coming weeks, Selbst’s stay inside the Top 300 is very much in danger.
