GPI First Look: WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic
With Montreal in the books, the WPT is right back at it with the presentation of the prestigious WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic, an event that has been part of the WPT calendar since day one:
KID POKER vs THE MAD ONE
Marvin Rettenmaier (GPI#3) was the king of the GPI in September and October. Since then, Daniel Negreanu (GPI#1)has taken over both the GPI300 and the GPI Player of the Year races.
While Kid Poker has decided to take the last six weeks off, choosing to rest before making the late-season charge, Rettenmaier has played a full schedule going from Jacksonville to St. Marteen to Montreal and now Las Vegas. Despite not cashing at either WPT Jacksonville or partypoker WPT Montreal, Rettenmaier would go onto final table the first ever WPT Caribbean, finishing in fourth position. Marvin also finished 10th at the WPT Grand Prix de Paris while Daniel was off.
ONE FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS
They don’t call him the Magician for nothing. Incredibly, Antonio Esfandiari (GPI#37) has final tabled this event for three straight seasons. Even more incredible? Esfandiari will be looking to cash in this event for the sixth consecutive year when play starts on Friday.
Esfandiari’s Season IX victory at the Five Diamond certainly re-energized his career.
Antonio isn’t the only big name pro to have won this tournament. The winners’ list reads as a who’s who of poker. Past champions include former WSOP World Champion Joe Hachem, Negreanu, Chino Rheem, James Dempsey and last year’s winner, Ravi Raghavan … all of which (with the exception of Hachem) are expected to be part of the field when play begins on Friday.
