Mahoney Wins ANZPT Perth, WSOPC and LAPC Updates, Sands Semi-Retires

Patrick Mahoney Wins ANZPT Perth

The second stop of Season 6 of the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour brought the action to Crown Perth for an AUD $2,200 NLHE Main Event. There were a total of 256 players in the ANZPT tournament, creating a prize pool of $512K.

Day 2 thinned the field from 145 to 48, and Sal Fazzino led that group with 258,200 chips. Day 3 then pushed through the money bubble to allow the top 27 players to cash. David Lim and Aaron Lim were among them, and it was Stephen Woodhead who bubbled the final table for AUD $8,200.

The final table began on March 2 with Paul Murray as the chip leader, Patrick Mahoney in second, and Scott Davies in third. But Murray lost ground and many chips were shuffled during several rounds of big double-ups. Ultimately, Dean Blatt made it to heads-up as the chip leader against Mahoney, but the latter prevailed and won.

1st place: Patrick Mahoney (AUD $120,000)
2nd place: Dean Blatt(AUD $86,100)
3rd place: Scott Davies (AUD $57,400)
4th place: Brian McAllister (AUD $37,100)
5th place: Sal Fazzino (AUD $30,700)
6th place: Matthew Rolfe (AUD $25,600)
7th place: Paul Murray (AUD $20,500)
8th place: Vesko Zmukic (AUD $16,400)

WSOPC Caesars Nears Final Table

The World Series of Poker Circuit was at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for the last tournament of its kind in that particular poker room, which announced it would be reducing its size and location after the series.

The $1,675 NLHE Main Event drew 303 players on the first day and another 394 on the second, making for a total of 697 players in the tournament. The prize pool was set at $1,045,500, out of which the top 72 would be paid.

March 2 was Day 2 and started with 129 returning players. But the money bubble quickly burst and only 28 players remained at the dinner break.

WPT LA Poker Classic Sets Prize Pool

The World Poker Tour was at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles for its WPT L.A. Poker Classic. The $10K Main Event began on March 1 with one starting day and no reentries, though registration was open through Level 7 on Day 2.

Day 1 brought in 501 players but ended with only 370 of them still holding chips. Scott Blackman was in the lead with 190,300 chips, with Ali Eslami quite a bit behind in second place with 129,200 chips.

Day 2 saw more players register, and that brought the final total to 534 players. The prize pool was $5,126,400, which would be used to pay the top 63 players and give the winner $1,015,460.

David Sands Semi-Retires from Poker

According to a Twitter exchange with Doyle Brunson, the Godfather of Poker asked David Sands if the rumor was true that he was retiring from the game. He responded, “I am, to an extent. I took a job at a hedge fund – learning how to place some bigger bets.”

It is unknown if Sands will compete in the summer’s WSOP in Las Vegas, but he will be spending less time at the tables in general.
