GPI releases new scoring system in time for World Series of Poker

Updated scoring system to determine 2016 WSOP and GPI Players of the Year

LAS VEGAS (June 3, 2016) – The Global Poker Index, who, along with the Hendon Mob Player Database, are the authority in live tournament rankings and results, have announced details on its updated GPI Scoring System, which will debut at the World Series of Poker as the GPI will once again power the WSOP Player of the Year race.

The GPI normalized their data, analyzed tournament trends and made alterations in hopes of rewarding players on a more balanced level going forward, making adjustments to its key components: size of field, buy-in and finishing position. Also, event winners will see their scores earn an even larger percentage of points compared to the scores of others, for the most part.

“We have spent nearly a year reviewing our scoring system and we’re confident that we’ve made the necessary adjustments in order to ensure that important points can be scored at any buy-in” commented GPI Head of Poker Content Eric Danis. “When the GPI scoring system was first introduced five years ago, it did not include points for any events with a buy-in under $1,500, with the GPI now including all events, an adjustment was necessary.”

The team also took in all the feedback it received from poker players and members of the media (through articles, blogs, Twitter posts, e-mails) during the review.

The 2016 GPI Player of the Year race will also kickoff using the new scoring system.  Here is the opening Top 5 for 2016 GPI PoY (as of June 1, 2016):

  1. Ari Engel (CAN), 2,262.23 points
  2. Fedor Holz (GER), 2,207.90
  3. Steve O’Dwyer (USA), 2,184.01
  4. Chance Kornuth (USA), 2,124.36
  5. Samuel Panzica (USA), 2,059.07

A minimum of 32 total entries will be required in order for a tournament to qualify for GPI points; 21 total entries were required prior to this change.

Meanwhile, the GPI is set to activate their new scoring system to determine the GPI World Poker Rankings (GPI300) starting on January 1, 2017.
