Former Footballer Wins WPT Marbella, GPS Southend Result

Watts Wins it all in Marbella

Former professional footballer-turned-poker-player Steve Watts has become the latest owner of a WPT trophy after taking down the organisations latest event in Marbella.

The WPT National Marbella Main Event came to a conclusion over the weekend and when the betting had finished it was Watts who scored a win after beating Omar Anaya heads-up.

Watts, who used to play for Leyton Orient in the UK, entered the final table in a confident mood thanks to an overwhelming chip lead but he almost fell prematurely after his pocket queens found themselves up against Konstantin Kostyakov’s kings.

Fortunately a queen on the board gave the Englishman the pot and an even bigger advantage over the final few.

Indeed, as the tournament progressed and Watts’ confidence grew, he eventually found himself heads-up with Anaya and within two hands the title was his. After flopping two-pair the budding poker pro was able to swerve Anaya’s straight draw to scoop the final pot, €31,000 and his first WPT title.

WPT Marbella Main Event Final Result:

1. Steve Watts – €31,000

2. Omar Anaya – €22,000

3. Carlos Duran – €14,000

4. Carsten Joh – €10,450

5. Daniel Cervan – €7,800

6. Jose Maria Solis – €6,300

7. Richard Cashman – €5,200

McAdam Ends Tournament Drought in Southend

The latest Genting Poker Series Main Event came to a conclusion on Sunday after Robert McAdam walked away with the top prize in Southend.

Despite being a long-time fan of poker, McAdam’s activity in the live arena is less strong as his participation in the GPS Southend Main Event was his first money finish for three years.

Indeed, the Englishman’s last cash game in 2011 when his finished 59th at UKIPT Nottingham but since then his record has been somewhat lacking.

However, that all changed this weekend after he managed to overcome a tough field on the south coast to walk away with his first GPS title and £33,730.

As usual a number of the UK’s top pros were on display in the £440 Main Event, but when it came to playing for the title it was McAdam who dominated.

After making his way past the likes of Danny Tran and Ben Winsor, McAdam need just a few hands to overcome Leon Campbell heads-up.

With the board showing Ts 7c 2h, both Campbell and McAdam committed their stacks but when the cards were revealed it was the latter’s Kc Tc that held the lead. As the turn and river failed to provide any help for Campbell’s 7h 6s the final pot was pushed towards McAdam along with the latest GPS trophy.

GPS Southend Main Event Result:

1. Rob McAdam – £33,730

2. Leon Campbell – £22,500

3. Dean Clay – £15,000

4. Briony Stone – £8,750

5. Ben Winsor – £6,750
