GPI First Look: WPT Grand Prix de Paris

After the thrills and excitement of the World Series of Poker Europe, the tournament circuits makes a short ride into downtown Paris to the Aviation Club de France as the World Poker Tour Grand Prix de Paris is set to takeoff:

SPOTLIGHT ON SALSBERG

Matt Salsberg GPIA year ago, poker fans witness one of the most impressive final table lineup in WPT history. The German duo of Philipp Gruissem (GPI#16) and Fabian Quoss (GPI#43) and the North American combo of Timothy Adams (GPI#76) and Mohsin Charania (GPI#50) fought long and hard in an attempt to capture the Grand Prix title but in the end, it was Matt Salsberg’s (GPI#46) coming out party. Salsberg would claim his first WPT title en route to becoming the Season XI Player of the Year on the World Poker Tour. Salsberg defeated Danish star Theo Jorgensen (GPI#578), who won the Grand Prix back a few years ago during Season IX, heads-up.

STARK RAVING MAD

After six straight weeks atop the GPI mountain, “Mad” Marvin Rettenmaier (GPI#2) lost the top spot on Thursday. He’s going to Paris with one thing in mind, getting that #1 spot back. However, things won’t be that easy for Rettenmaier who will have to survive the charge of the #3 ranked player on the GPI, Mike Watson (GPI#3). Watson is already running deep in the High Roller event at the Aviation Club, we’ll have to see if that run translates into Main Event success for the Canadian.

Daniel Shak (GPI#28), Jason Koon (GPI#38) and EPT London Main Event Champion Robin Ylitalo (GPI#157) are also expected to enter the Aviation Club in the next two days … as is everyone’s favourite pal Phil Hellmuth (GPI#96). Upset at himself that he missed the WSOPE High Roller bracelet event, Hellmuth has decided to stay in Paris a few extra days in order to hit the felt at the WPT Grand Prix de Paris:

Cards are in the air in Paris, bonne chance à tous!!
