Pope’s Divine WSOP Win, Humphris Claims GUKPT Gold
Pope Beats Vamplew for Bracelet
A weekend of frantic action inside the Rio saw not one but two players taking home a slice of WSOP history.
First to climb atop of the winner’s podium and raise his first piece of poker silverware was Trevor Pope. After starting the final table of Event #2 with a dominant chip lead, Pope was able to bet and bluff at wille as those around him slowly buckled under the pressure.
Despite being flanked by some of the world’s best grinders, including Dan Kelly, David Vamplew and Darryll Fish, Pope was put on a masterful display throughout the finale.
Indeed, leaving a trail of broken dreams in his wake, Pope needed just seven hands to dispatch with the UK’s Vamplew before claiming the $553,906 top prize.
Event #2: $5,000 No Limit Hold’em Eight Handed Final Result:

Sylvestre Sinks Berger
As Pope was clinching his first title, Charles Sylvestre was collecting the final few chips in Event #3. The stacked $1,000 re-entry event featured more than 3,000 players, but by the time just nine players remained it was Sylvestre who was able to finish on top.
The American pro, who was at his first WSOP final table, managed to clinch a career defining prize of $491,360 after just a few hands of heads-up play against Seth Berger.
After some pre-flop raising the two players watched as a [3d] [Ad] [Kc] board developed. A succession of bets and calls saw the [7s] land on the turn before the [8h] completed the board.
A prompt all-in from Sylvestre received a quick call from Berger and, after the former tabled [As] [Jh], the latter mucked his cards and watched as the remainder of his stack was collected by Sylvestre.
With that the match was over and Sylvestre became the third bracelet winner of this year’s WSOP.

GUKPT Portsmouth
Despite the eyes of the poker world being split between the ISPT at Wembley and the WSOP in Las Vegas, the GUKPT’s latest incarnation came to a conclusion over the weekend.
While it might not have had the glitz and glamour of the Series in Vegas, the Portsmouth leg of the tour attracted 134 players for its£550 Main Event.
Although the tournament might have been lacking a certain amount of star power on account of many of the UK’s best players off chasing WSOP glory, the action at the felt was still of a high quality.
Indeed, a flurry of action at yesterday’s final table Dom Mahoney inflict a spate of eliminations on the table and negotiate a healthy cut of the prizepool heads-up.
Before Mahoney and Nick Humphris set about the task of battling for the title, the pair agreed on a deal that saw the former secure £17,850 while the latter banked £16,500.
Satisfied with their prizes, Mahoney and Humphris decided to put all their chips in the middle soon after and, when the final cards had been dealt, Humphries pocket kings were enough to scoop the pot and the GUKPT title.
1st | Nick Humphris | £16,500* |
2nd | Dom Mahoney | £17,850* |
3rd | Simon Skinner | £8.880 |
