WPT and WSOP to Conclude; Haxton’s High Stakes Win

Haxton and Sulsky’s All-Star Wins

A host of GPI superstars have been competing on the virtual felt this weekend as part of PokerStars’ All-Star Showdown.

Kicking off the action on Saturday was Benjamin Sulsky and Tobias Kuder. Being one of the online world’s biggest winners in 2012, as well as being ranked on the GPI, there was little doubt that Sulsky was the favourite.

Indeed, when the cards were in the air the match went according to the form book, with Sulsky dispatching with his Austrian rival in 1,457 hands.

The next pair of stars to take to the felt was Isaac Haxton and Alexander Millar. Predicting a long match, Haxton was pushed to the limit by his British opponent, with both players taking the lead at multiple points.

However, after 18 hour of battling, Haxton finally overcame Millar and moved on to the next round where he will face Sulsky for a place in the final.

The next two matches are scheduled to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday and will feature the likes of Phil Galfond and Daniel Cates.

Ireland’s Craic-ing Poker Action

Irish and European poker players have been keeping warm this past weekend thanks to some fiery action at PaddyPowerPoker’s Irish Winter Festival.

In total 385 runners descended on the Burlington Hotel in Dublin for the €1,125 main event. Among those sampling the liquid delights of Ireland, enjoying the craic and stacking chips on Day 1 were UK pros Neil Channing and Karl Mahrenholz. Also in attendance were a number of famous native faces, including charity boxer John O’Shea and Niall Smyth.

Unfortunately the aforementioned players didn’t manage to survive the cull on Day 1 and with just 158 players left at the start of Day 2 it looked as though today’s final session would welcome a high number of players.

However, the jovial atmosphere lead to a spate of eliminations and just 19 players left at the end of the day. Of the remaining players competing in today’s final session, former EPT Champion Julian Thew is arguably the most recognisable and will certainly be in contention for the title and the €100,000 first place prize.

Airing in over 120 countries, as well as online at WSOP.com, the event will truly be a global spectacle.
