WSOP Main Event Latest and the Series’ Stats

A Record-breaking WSOP

Day 1C of this year’s WSOP Main Event got underway earlier today and when the masses had finally settled into their session the overall field stood at 3,467. By the close of play just 2,306 of those starters were left and leading the way was Mark Koon.

Having bagged 246,900 chips, Koon not only finished Day 1C on top ahead of Imari Love (214,300) and Karlo Lopez (196,550), but will take the largest starting stack into Day 2.

Also making it through a crowded day inside the Rio was a slew of famous faces including Isaac Haxton (134,250), Phil Ivey (119,650), Marvin Rettenmaier (117,825) and Phil Hellmuth (92,850).

As the final cohort of Day 1 grinders were trying to build a stack large enough to make it further in the tournament, the WSOP organisers were busy behind the scenes collating this year’s stats.

After running the numbers it’s emerged that this year’s festival is the largest ever. Breaking the 2011 record of 75,672 total runners, this year’s Series has welcomed an impressive 79,741 participants.

Beyond this benchmark, a number of other records have been set at the 2013 WSOP, including: the most events with a $1 million+ first prize (five), the largest non-Hold’em $10,000 event (Event #61) and the biggest High Roller event (166 players in the $111,111 One Drop).

Such a wave of support for this year’s WSOP has certainly helped quell any further speculation that poker’s popularity is decreasing. Indeed, as online poker begins to creep back into the US and Asian market continues to expand, it looks as though the industry is hitting a timely upswing.
