GPI 300 Update: Paul Volpe Reaches Top Twenty

elkySix of the Top Twenty players have new results this week and three of them move up in rank. Bertrand Grospellier (GPI#4 0) cashed in the EPT Berlin €1,000 NLHE Turbo event while Bryn Kenney (GPI#6 0) made the money in the PartyPoker WPT Barcelona €3,200 NLHE Main Event. Michael Watson (GPI#2 0) and Dan Shak both cashed at the WSOP Asia-Pacific festival, Watson in the A$1,100 NLHE Accumulator event and Shak in the A$1,650 PLO event. None of these players have open slots in Period 1 therefore all of these results were excluded by the five score cap. However, Shak moves up 4 spots to GPI#17 thanks mostly to the aging results of other players along with picking up a net 30 points due to his 5th place finish in the 2012 Festa Al Lago $5,000 NLHE event aging into Period 2.

Micah Raskin won the EPT Berlin Cup €3,000 High Roller and moves up 5 spots to GPI#11. His new result replaced his score for his 8th place finish in the 2012 Sands Bethlehem Deep Stacks Extravaganza $2,500 NLHE Main Event earning him a net 177 points. This puts Raskin at his highest rank to date. Ilkin Amirov (GPI#217 +47), Andrey Gulyy (GPI#120 +53), and Sorel Mizzialso made the final table and move up in rank. Mizzi (GPI# 40 +25) returns to the Top Fifty with the addition of 196 net points he earned by finishing 6th.

Paul Volpe reaches the Top Twenty for the first time this week after cashing in the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown $5,000 NLHE Championship Event. Volpe first appeared in the GPI 300 as recently as August but has cashed twelve times since, including impressive showings at the WPT L.A. Poker Classic and Bay 101 Shooting Stars festivals as well as the EPT/UK & Ireland festival in London.

selbstFor a new player to reach the Top Twenty another must exit and that is the case for Joseph Serock (GPI#26 -7) andVanessa Selbst (GPI#31 -16). Serock cashed alongside Volpe in the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown $5,000 NLHE Championship Event but it did not translate into a score gain for him as it did for Volpe due to other aging scores. His new score replaces his score for his 6th place finish in the 2012 WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic netting him a 15 point gain. However, his 3rd place finish from the same event last year also ages into Period 3 this week. It is replaced by a lower score in Period 2 and the overall effect is a total net loss of 78 points. Vanessa Selbst falls from GPI#15 to GPI#31 this week due to having results aging into Periods 2, 3, and 4. The aging of her win in the 2012 Festa Al Lago $5,000 NLHE event leaves her with just one score in Period 1. This along with the other aging scores lowers her overall score by 285 points.

WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown Provides Largest Changes

Matt Salsberg and Faraz Jaka had the largest score gains of the week after cashing in the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown $5,000 NLHE Championship Event. Both players had open slots in Period 1 allowing Salsberg to pick up 247 points for his 13th place finish. Salsberg moves up 32 spots and into the Top Fifty for the first time at GPI#34. Jaka finished 9th but has a score aging out of Period 6 giving him a net gain of 246 points. He moves up 34 spots to GPI#69.

Two of the largest rank jumps also came from cashers in the Championship Event. David Tuthill gained a net 232 points for his 11th place finish and moves up 91 spots to GPI#153.Matt Giannettiearned 218 net points for his 20th place finish and moves up 88 spots to GPI#165.

Next Week:

The EPT Berlin Main Event will conclude this week. The €5,000 + 300 event drew a field of 912 and will pay out 136 players. The reporting of this event could have significant impacts on the rankings as many GPI ranked players were in attendance and the winner will earn over 500 points.
