WPT Five Diamond: GPI PoY Smith Secures First WPT Title

The WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic wrapped-up overnight and the defending GPI Player of the Year was the eventual winner…

NEWEST CHAMPIONS CLUB MEMBER

Congratulations to reigning and defending GPI Player of the Year – and former world #1 – Dan Smith (GPI#32) who, for the second straight season, closes out the season with a bang! One year ago, Smith was winning his sixth event of the poker season at EPT Prague. Last night, Smith became the latest person to enter the WPT Champions Club after winning the prestigious Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic.

You may be shocked to know that despite tons of success on tour during the past few seasons, this is Smith’s first major event victory of his career. We expect for Smith to keep the momentum going and head on over to Prague, although he has yet to announce his plans as of yet.

GPI IMPLICATIONS

Smith and former WPT Season X Player of the Year Joseph Serock (GPI#30) were coming into this final table neck-and-neck on the GPI300, both players ranked in the 30s … Smith should take a bigger leap forward once next week’s rankings are released, although his EPT Prague score from last season also continues to lose value so, we’ll have to wait until next Thursday to find out.

Upstart American Barry Hutter (GPI#435) and Australian poker legend Gary Benson (GPI#520) may also receive an early Christmas present next week as both players could possibly enter the GPI300 with their final table performances at Bellagio.
