GPI Tournament Report: Winzeler Wins FSPC + ANZPT, LAPT, CPPT and More

We take you to Florida, New Zealand, Peru, Oklahoma, Macau and other places around the world in this week’s GPI Tournament Recap:

FLORIDA STATE POKER CHAMPIONSHIP

Hans Winzeler GPIIt is one of the most anticipated events for many Florida poker pros and amateurs alike, the Florida State Poker Championship was once again attended by some of the biggest names in the game and while the likes of Adam Levy, Matt Waxman, Maurice Hawkins, Abbey Daniels and Ashton Griffin would cash in the event, it’s WPT regular Hans Winzeler (GPI#811) who would end up winning the 2013 edition of the FSPC, collecting over 160K and picking up valuable GPI1000 and GPI PoY points.

This wasn’t the first final table appearance at the FSPC for Winzeler. In 2012, Brandon Barnes would win the event with Winzeler (pictured, right) finishing in third position. Other notable Top 10 finishers in 2012 included: Levy, Tommy Vedes, Darryll Fish and Micah Raskin.

Former champions of this event include: Connor Drinan (2011), Mike Matusow (2010) and Harrison Gimbel (2008).

ANZPT QUEENSTOWN SNOWFEST

Daniel Neilson GPIIn the most feel-good result of the week, Australian Jonathan Bredin picked the right time to earn his first cash on the live tournament circuit, defeating 125 players to win the ANZPT Snowfest at the SKYCITY Casino in Queenstown, New Zealand. Bredin, who is afflicted with cerebral palsy, took home the $93,600 NZD top prize.

Amazingly, Bredin won the event with the exact hand he has tattooed on his left shoulder, the king of spades and the king of clubs.

A pair of Daniels – Daniel Laidlaw (GPI#475) (who finished 12th at this year’s Aussie Millions) and Daniel Neilson (GPI#307) (pictured, right) (who’s career resumé includes two High Roller victories: at ANZPT Sydney and at the Sydney Poker Championship) – each final tabled the event.

LAPT PERU

LAPT Logo GPIChile’s Patricio Rojas picked up the first win of his poker career on the live tournament circuit winning the latest the Main Event at the latest tour stop of the Latin American Poker Tour in Lima, Peru, the host city of last year’s tour Grand Final.

Over 550 players entered the event, creating a +800K prizepool. Team PokerStars Pro Leo Fernandez (GPI#325), who won LAPT Panama during Season V, finished 12th in this event, earning $8,760 for his efforts.

CARD PLAYER POKER TOUR CHOCTAW

Blair Hinkle GPIThe growing Card Player Poker Tour enjoyed another successful tour stop as the CPPT made its way to the Choctaw Casino Resort in Durant, Oklahoma as Mo Arani picked up the lion’s share of the huge 1.1M USD prizepool.

2008 WSOP bracelet winner and two-time WSOP Circuit ring-holder, Blair Hinkle (GPI#533) (pictured, right), final tabled the event, earning a little over 30K USD for his seventh place finish.

Coming off her win at the last CPPT tour stop during the Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza in Las Vegas, WSOP bracelet winner Allyn Jaffrey Shulman finished in 19th position in this event. Fellow WSOP 2012 bracelet winner Larry Wright also managed to cash in the event finishing in 11th position.

2013 GOLD STRIKE WORLD POKER OPEN

Louisiana native Jeremy Gaubert (GPI#9714) won his second Gold Strike World Poker Open title last week, overtaking the 153-player field and earning over 120K USD for his efforts. Gaubert first won the event back in 2009 where he survived a final table that included Chris Moneymaker, Chad Brown and Tommy Vedes.

The event, which used to be part of the World Poker Tour TV schedule, does include a list of notable winners including: defending champion Galen Kester, David Diaz, Tyler Smith, Clonie Gowen and five-time WSOP bracelet winner – including the Main Event – Scotty Nguyen.

APT MACAU 2013

APT Logo GPIHenrik Toleffsen (GPI#12407) of Norway defeated American John Conkright heads-up to win the APT Macau Main Event to win over 980K HKD.

Reigning APT Asian Poker Player of the Year Sam Razavi (GPI#197) won the PLO event in Macau. His win places him at the top of the 2013 APT Player of the Year standings. Razavi, who talked to us about being Asian Player of the Year during the WSOP this year, looks to take the title for a second year in a row.

MERIT WORLD CUP OF POKER

Jan Bendik GPIWhile we wait for the WPT to setup shop in a week, Cyprus was busy hosting the Merit World Cup of Poker.

Necip Felengizbilge (GPI#3971) took home over 220K USD for the victory, defeating Lebanon’s Albert Daher (GPI#794) heads-up for the Main Event title. Daher enjoyed a three-cash performance at EPT London this past winter, including a 12th place finish in the High Roller event.

Defending EPT Player of the Year Jan Bendik (pictured, right), Andrey Shatilov and former November Niner Kelly Kim all picked up side event victories in Cyprus.

2013 MOHEGAN SUN’S SUMMER SHOWDOWN

Ari Engel GPIAmerican Robert Ricciuti (GPI#29795) won the Main Event at the Mohegan Sun’s Summer Showdown, collecting the 21K top prize.

GPI300 member Ari Engel (GPI#264) (pictured, right) final tabled the event finishing in eighth position. Thomas Hoglund (GPI#624) finished in 1oth place.
