GPI to Reveal Players of the Decade This Week

PLAYER OF THE DECADE PROJECT

This summer marked the 10 year anniversary of Chris Moneymaker historic victory in the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event, turning a satellite win into one of the biggest cashes in poker history. Moneymaker’s win set off the now famous poker boom.

The Global Poker Index, in conjunction with The Hendon Mob, the largest live poker database, have run all the stats from the past ten years to determine who was the BEST poker player of the decade on the live tournament circuit. Throughout the week, the GPI will countdown the Top 9 players of the decade, starting with the #9 player later today. The GPI will then reveal two players per day counting down the the release of the Player of the Decade on Friday.

HOW THE TOP 9 WERE DETERMINED

In order to come up with our Top 9, we obviously used our exclusive GPI Scoring System, minus the aging factor. Similarly to our Player of the Year race, the Player of the Decade process to determine our Top 9 also used a maximum of qualifying events per season … players’ Best 12 GPI scoring results from each of the past 10 years (total 120 results) were used to determine our list.

Scores were then tabulated and our top players of the past decade are about to be revealed!

WHO WILL MAKE THE LIST?

It will certainly be interesting to see who makes the cut in our Top 9. Players who have consistently enjoyed success on the live circuit throughout the past decade will certainly have the advantage … players like Phil Ivey, John Juanda and Erik Seidel should be considered serious contenders to make the list … but what about players from the next generation, who didn’t get their start on tour until later in the decade? Players like Jason Mercier, Bertrand Grospellier and even Marvin Rettenmaier? Will their tournament successes later in the decade allow them to make the list?
