Players to Watch
With the poker world about to be focused on Las Vegas for the next two months, the Global Poker Index sees a calm week. With very few new results reporting, event aging creates some small changes to the Top Twenty and only one player makes their GPI Debut.
Grospellier Remains On Top; Helppi Exits Top Twenty While Selbst Joins
With no new tournament results this week for the GPI Top Twenty, the top of the Index is quiet this week. Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (GPI#1 0) holds on to the top spot for the third week in a row with Jason Mercier (GPI#2 0) a mere 23 points behind him. David "Doc" Sands moved up to GPI#3 last week, pushing Sorel Mizzi to GPI#4, and both players hold steady this week. Steve O'Dwyer (GPI#5 +3) squeaks into the Top Five this week, getting a boost from the positive effects of aging. O'Dwyer's 5th place finish in the 2011 Five Star World Poker Classic $5,000 NLHE was not counting in Period 2 last week because he had four higher scores already counting in that period so this result was excluded by the cap. With this result aging into Period 3, where O'Dwyer only had two cashes counting last week, it is no longer excluded by the cap, giving him a 78 point boost to GPI#5. Mike McDonald (GPI#9 +5) also moves up because of aging, joining the Top Ten this week. McDonald's 5th place finish in the 2011 EPT Grand Final €10,000 NLHE High Roller Turbo Event ages into Period 3 this week. As in the case of O'Dwyer, the result was not counting in Period 2 but counts in Period 3 where McDonald only had one result previously counting. This gives the 22-year old an 86 point gain to lift him back into the Top Ten after a two week absence.
Bryn Kenney (GPI#20 -4) and Juha Helppi (GPI#23 -10) both experience the negative effects of aging this week with Helppi exiting the Top Twenty and Kenney nearly following suit. Kenney's cash in the 2010 NAPT Los Angeles $4,750 NLHE Main Event moves out of Period 3 this week, where it was one of the top four scores, and into Period 4, where it is excluded by the cap. The aging of this event costs Kenney 71 points dropping him to the edge of the Top Twenty. Helppi has two events aging into older periods this week. His runner-up finish in the 2011 EPT Grand Final €5,000 NLHE 8-Max ages into Period 3 this week, costing him 114 points due to the lower multiplier. That event knocks out his 4th place finish in the 2011 EPT Berlin €5,000 NLHE 6-Max which was previously counting in Period 3 but is now excluded by the cap, costing Helppi another 63 points. The Finn gets a small 49 point gain from his cash in the 2011 Midnight Sun €1,000 Limit Seven Card Stud Event now counting in Period 2 as the Grand Final Result moves out of that period. The total loss for Helppi is a devastating 128 points causing his exit from the Top Twenty.
This all means good news for Vanessa Selbst (GPI#19), who moves up two spots just into the Top Twenty after a one-week absence despite no change in her score.
WPT Jacksonville Reports Final Results, Giannetti Soars; IPT San Remo and Unibet Open Create Big Moves
After a huge Fall 2011, including a win at WPT Malta and three other final tables, Matt Giannetti (GPI#167 +68) has had a slow spring, with no cashes in 2012 until last week when he cashed in the WPT Jacksonville $5,000 NLHE Main Event. That result reports this week and gives the 2011 WSOP Main Event final-tablist the third largest upward movement in rank and third largest score gain on the Global Poker Index, with a 177 point uptick.
The largest score gain this week belongs to Mustapha Kanit (GPI#67 +76). Kanit picks up 297 points for his runner-up finish in the IPT San Remo €5,000 NLHE High Roller Event which is enough to give him the second largest upward movement in rank. The largest upward movement in rank belongs to Kent Lundmark (GPI#134) who moves up 82 spots with his runner-up finish in the Unibet Open Paris €1,500 NLHE Main Event, good for a 222 point gain, the second largest this week.
Welcome to the Global Poker Index; Welcome Back
While only one player, Vitor Coelho (GPI#196), makes his GPI debut this week, six players return: David Sonelin (GPI#296), Paul Berende (GPI#214), Stuart Fox (GPI#274), David Pham (GPI#298), Max Silver (GPI#299) and Connor Drinan (GPI#300).
WPT World Championship Gears Up
With the higher buy-in events at Bellagio gearing up this week leading into the WPT $25,000 Championship Event and the $100,000 NLHE Super High Roller, the Global Poker Index is likely to feel the effects for the next few weeks. Expect big moves as these fields will be dense with GPI-ranked players.
